How Facial Cupping Works & Why It’s a Game-Changer for Your Skin

What is Facial Cupping?

Facial cupping is an ancient skin care practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), designed to rejuvenate and restore the skin naturally.

Unlike traditional body cupping, which can leave marks, facial cupping is a gentle and relaxing practice without leaving bruising on the skin.

In this practice, we use specialized suction cups that suction the skin gently away from the rest of the face, neck and decollete to increase the flow of nutrient and oxygen-rich blood to the skin and muscles and stimulate qi — the vital life force energy that supports overall well-being.

By applying a gentle suction facial cupping helps to:

  • lift, and tone the face by releasing muscle tension

  • break up fascial adhesions that stick to the skin and muscles

  • detoxify the skin by stimulating lymphatic drainage

  • achieve a natural brow lift

  • improve the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles

The suction act of cupping draws up and separates the different layers of tissues into the cups, creating a vacuum effect without causing trauma to the skin. We are avoiding bruising or trauma to the skin because the suction of the facial cups is not too deep, and we don’t remain in one static position for very long. This encourages a rush of white blood cells, platelets, and healing nutrients to flood the area, resulting in a brighter, firmer, and more sculpted complexion with enhanced collagen production.

Benefits of Facial Cupping

Facial cupping has been shown to:

  • Increases oxygen-rich blood circulation to skin and tissues

  • Stimulates lymphatic flow

  • Releases fascial adhesions and promotes the production of hyaluronan (for hydrated, plump skin)

  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, resulting in relaxation and stress relief

  • stimulates collagen production, improving skin elasticity

  • relaxes muscle tension

  • Enhances skin care absorption, making serums and oils more effective

  • brightens the skin for a natural glow

  • minimizes the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles

  • tones chin, jawline, neck, and décollete

  • decreases puffiness

  • Improves nutrient delivery and product absorption

  • Detoxifies the skin by flushing out waste through lymphatic drainage

Possible Side Effects of Facial Cupping

Facial cupping is a gentle, non-invasive practice, but like any skincare technique, it may cause temporary side effects. Some people experience:

  • mild dizziness

  • lightheadedness

  • nausea

  • cold sweats

These effects are rare and typically subside pretty quickly. To minimize discomfort, stay hydrated, avoid cupping on an empty stomach, and always work with clean, well-lubricated skin to ensure a smooth glide.

When to Avoid Facial Cupping (Contraindications)

Facial cupping may not be suitable for everyone. Avoid this practice if you:

  1. have hemophilia or other bleeding/clotting disorders

  2. are taking blood thinners or currently undergoing chemotherapy

  3. have active cancers or are under chemotherapy

  4. have active viruses or infections (cold sores, shingles, etc.)

  5. have open wounds, broken skin, or lesions

  6. have lupus or tumours or other severe autoimmune conditions

  7. have congestive heart or renal failure

  8. have thin, fragile skin (especially for older clients)

  9. have pustular inflamed acne or rosacea

If you’re unsure whether facial cupping is right for you, consult a licensed esthetician or healthcare provider before starting.
